IHC Scout restoration or build to my desires

IHC-Scout No Comments

So I have come to the question… Do I want to simply restore my scout, which is all original, with same but new or should I make it what I have envisioned all these years? I don’t really have any good reasons to simply restore the scout and keep it all original. I do however really want it to be how I envision it before they ban gasoline vehicles.

This thought has come up now that I am looking at changing two things. The first is the vacuum lines and the second is the points in the distributor. I am thinking of capping off all the vacuum lines as I really don’t need them. The other option is to replace all those vacuum lines. Any comments? I would basically document the virgin state it is in and the state I change it to (just like anything else I change on it) with a write up and images.

The second change would be to go to a Pertronix Ignitor (I, II, or III not sure of these numbers) to replace the points in the distributor. I believe this would require a change to the coil and that, known to melt, International quirky fabric wire (toaster wire) that goes from the coil through the firewall. I would definitely be able to eliminate that hazardous wire. This is circuit 16 in the service manual and is a “resistance wire from the coil to connector.  This wire is 72 inches long to provide a total of 18OHMS resistance and should not be altered in anyway”. The wire is actually looped back and forth under all the wire wrap tape. It can get hot enough to melt the wires wrapped along with it or catch the dash on fire. No thanks. This Petronix Ignitor should eliminate the need for that wire altogether. Comments anyone?

These changes, as I have said, will change it from original to safer and easier to manage. I am going with my desires on this number, but wondered if anyone has thought of anything I haven’t.
